Hunter's Poem

Information Report:Pigfish          14-3-18

The Red Pigfish (bodianus unimaculatus)is an magnificent fish found mostly in the kermedec islands in New Zealand.
Its glowing ruby red shade stands out in the water.Towards  the tail are white splashes that look like pearls. If compared to each other the female tends to be a lighter shade. The ground colour of her body is a pinkish white with three rows of 10 red lines. The pigfish is a family member of the warsse. There growth can grow longer than a ruler.

Unfortunately, the young and themselves are cutting down the population from overfishing, bottom trawling and bycatches. They are quite rare to find in other, places but in a protected area they can spread across the world. And the reason they are only in protected areas is because people have taken too many.

Most of the pigfish breeding time is from July-September when it’ll start to spawn. When seen a cleaner fish it will extend its fins and drift into mid water and will try to attract a fish and start to breed. When this person was recording a video he noticed a pigfish trying to attract a snapper in mid sight.

Just like snapper pigfish have a wide ranging diet, this includes:Small shellfish, chitons, large kina, brittle stars, acadians, amphipods and crabs. But there go to meal is plankton and ecklonia. And the one thing that was really fascinating was that they can eat other dying pigfish.

In conclusion pigfish are a rare species so if not helped they will be on the brink of extinction .
